Grid Systems

Grids are awesome, they can make sense out of madness, well, most of the time, as long as they're used properly. I started off thinking grids were too boring and restrictive, then I worked out how to use them properly! I don't class myself as an expert on grids and grid systems but I've learnt to use them to add an element of control to my otherwise random nature. If used effectively a grid system will aid the balance and order of your pages and help layout continuity between pages. Here's the grid systems I've used and can recommend.

960px grid system

960 Grid Sytem

So who hasn't heard of this one?! This is the first grid system I ever used. Its a 960 pixel wide grid system (if you hadn't guessed already) and you can pick either 12, 16 or 24 columns. The download option comes with a great bunch of files from sketch sheets and a PSD full of guides through to the CSS files. Go check it out.

1140px fluid 12 column grid system

1140 Fluid grid system

I got a bit overlay excited the first time I used this grid system! I find it a little wide for a lot of projects but if I've got one that I want to have extra wide and still squish down to mobile size its perfect! Flawlessly fluid! The download for this one doesn't have as much as the 960gs but it does have all the files you need to use the framework. Check it out and don't forget to resize your browser window when you're there, mmmm squishy grid system goodness!
